Someone wiser than I once said, when sorrows come they come not in single spies, but in battalions.
Do we show the depths of our emotions often enough? Do we show the affection and concern in our hearts to those who need to see often enough? Or do we hide behind small matters that eat up the hours in the days? Do we shelter our fears and anxieties more frequently than we open them up to the world outside? Can we forgive the damage done and learn to love again?
Hours bleed into days into weeks and soon years have swallowed what time we had. Pictures fade, scars heal and yet Time spreads out like the first rays of the rising sun and takes us all away.
How many times do we walk away from one who so desperately needs a good ear to listen to him? How many times are pleas ignored, left to wither and die and yet the owner of those pleas must be left alone to cope?
So when the hordes of despair charge down on the lives of those we care for and love, do we leave them to suffer through the night?
I'm as guilty as they come, by my own admission. It took someone I love very deeply to shine that light on me.
I say enough.
It's time to live and help others live.
A single gesture of compassion can brighten the heavens. So let the heavens be bright.

I wrote this some time ago, after a friend's father died. Jim's dad wasn't much of human being, but he mattered to Jim. Jim kept asking the people around him for help and comfort and a kind ear to listen to. Apparently no one could help. I understand committments and responsibilities and what not, I'm a journalist so of course I understand the magnitude of a deadline. I sat down with Jim and he poured out the grinds from his coffee-pot soul onto my lap. It felt enlightening and beautiful to help a lost young man find even some measure of light in his darkest time.
